Scotty
=
So. Simon Pegg is going to be playing Scotty in the new Star Trek movie.
Between that and John Cho as Sulu, you'd think they were making a comedy.

Batman!
Everyone who knows me knows how excited I am about this:
The trailer is just okay, but I am more and more excited about the movie every time I think about it. Batman Begins was so well done. It made a blockbuster comic book movie while still getting pretty close to the tone (if not the look, or even really the plot) of one of the classic stories (in this case, the Frank Miller-penned Year One) of that character.
I'm also excited to see the joker done right. Tim Burton's 1989 Batman was good, and Jack Nicholson was great in it, but I think Dark Knight is going to better capture the insanity that really characterizes the Joker in the comics. Or at least I hope.
For how much I love Batman, I'm not that big a fan of the 1960s Adam West TV series. For a lot of people the campyness of it is what makes the show, but I just can't dig it. Then again, I don't like a lot of the older print comics (okay, pretty much all of the '30s-'60s) of Batman either.
In any case, if you've ever wondered what that TV show would have been like had they approached it seriously, without all the camp, the answer is pretty damn good:

But Ronnie? Ronnie the Bear? He could give a fuck.

So I have the first Harry Potter movie coming next in my NetFlix queue for one reason and one reason only. Wizard People, Dear Reader. Its on Illegal Art, which is the same label that put out the most recent Girl Talk (yes, he's done more than just Night Ripper) record.
WPDR is a spoken word project, meant to be played along with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. The author/reader, Brad Neely, spends most of the movie telling you what's happening, like a book on tape gone horribly wrong. Harry is "Ol' HP", Snape is "Snake" (and also a she), Ron is "Ronnie the Bear", Dumbledore is "Dumbledore the Half-Dead", and Hagrid is "Hagar the Horrible". Needless to say, he gets a lot of plot points wrong too, but you're too busy laughing to care.
Point in case:
I'm totally having people over to watch it sometime soon. Needless to say, there will be beer and Wizard People, Dear Readers!

Spiderman 3
So the trailer for Spiderman 3 is up on the official site. There have been a few leaks, however.
LIKE VENOM.

You can read more about that on Kung Fu Rodeo, that's where I nabbed that picture from.
I WAS going to include the YouTube video, but Sony had them pull it. So, here it is elsewhere: WMV on GorillaMask. Get it while its hot.

Vader
I found this today. Hilarious. If you dig Star Wars and know who James Earl Jones is, you owe it to yourself to watch this.
Dave sent me a link on The Best of YouTube today, and digging around there I found that.

Superman Returns

Laura and I saw Superman Returns last night.
All in all, it was really good. Not having seen all of the Christopher Reeve movies (I'm sure I saw one or two of them when I was little) I didn't have much context for a few things, like the fact that Lois and Superman had slept together. Well, they did, and Lois had his child. A kid who is apparently allergic to a lot of shit, but ends up proving who his father is when he throws a piano at a bad guy to save his mom.
Kevin Spacy was a great Lex Luthor, and Parker Posey was great as Kitty Kowalski. They were my two favorite actors to watch for the whole thing. Not that Kate Bosworth was a bad Lois Lane or anything, but I just didn't find her that remarkable. Brandon Routh was pretty good. Laura thinks he's cute. I think that he looked like they really did him up for the whole movie. He seemed really forced into the close he was wearing as Clark Kent. As Superman, its forgiveable.
Superman is a bit of an exaggeration to begin with, so when his face looks perfect to the point that when he's flying you can't tell if its him on a green screen or if its entirely CG, its okay. His costume is silly, naturally - he's in tights. He wasn't amazing either, but he was good.
While I enjoyed it quite a bit, it didn't give me the chills that the teaser trailer did. I mean, seriously, watch this shit and try not to get goosebumps:
Was it the best thing I've ever seen? No, but I'm really glad I went to see it. It was a lot of fun, and I'm very happy that they're reviving the most popular superhero of all time.

Movies
So I spent a fair portion of my day today at work watching movie trailers. Its not that I was COMPLETELY slacking off, I had a lot of downtime today.
I still haven't seen An Inconvenient Truth, but I will since I hear its coming to Lansing soon enough (this weekend actually). See the An Inconvenient Truth website to find out when and where its playing.
If you haven't seen the trailer, here you go:
or here on Apple.com.
While on Apple Trailers today, I ran across this: Who Killed the Electric Car?. Its another environmentally-themed film, so it goes along, and also delves into the politics of the environment, and why we haven't seen widespread use of electric cars yet. I intend to see it.
YouTube trailer:
I also found The Road to Guantanamo. It is a film about three British Muslims who were held without charges in Guantanamo for two years.
YouTube trailer:
All of these kind of get me worried about where we're going. I'm constantly dissapointed with the state of the world.
On a lighter note, the first trailer for Spiderman 3 is out. I'm somewhat excited.

Ghost Rider
Okay, so I never read much of the comic, but I like the Ghost Rider. I like the concept, and he could be sweet, I just never read it much.
But then they go and do this. I actually might be okay with that trailer if it wasn't Nick Cage playing Johnny Blaze. I don't get why they would put him in that role. Sigh.
But beyond that, the effects look alright, and from what I understand about that particular Ghost Rider (there've been more than one person and origin for the character) it seems more or less accurate. But Nick Cage? Come on.
The trailer looks okay. Like I said, the effects look cool, and the tone is kind of dark, but still kind of aware of how silly the premise is. Like a comic book.
All this seems alright, but I can't be convinced that he's Johnny Blaze. At all. I just look at him and I KNOW I'm going to be thinking "What is Nick Cage doing?" instead of thinking about the character.
